Music in Military Institutions

Braga – University of Minho, Department of Music [hybrid conference] | 29.09.2026

Emerging from the ancestral relationship between music and military institutions, "military bands" appeared in the late 18th century, consolidated during the 19th century, and became more complex in the 20th century. Throughout this journey, composers, conductors, and musicians gained prominence, the composition of groups evolved, roles diversified, professional careers were established, and a significant repertoire was built. Seeking to contribute to the study of this trajectory, we invite proposals including, but not limited to, the following thematic areas: (1) History of Military Bands (2) Women in Military Bands (3) Composers and Repertoire of Military Bands (4) Conductors and Musicians of Military Bands (5) The Relationship between Military Bands and Philharmonic/Wind Bands (6) Professional Careers in Military Bands (7) Diplomacy, Protocol, and Propaganda The working languages will be Portuguese, Spanish, and English. We accept proposals for individual papers (approx. 20 minutes), panels (3 to 4 papers), or round tables (3 to 5 participants, approx. 1 hour duration). Proposals must include a title, an abstract of up to 300 words, 5 keywords, and a biographical note of the author(s) (up to 150 words). Submissions should be sent by June 30, 2026, to musicanasinstituicoesmilitares@gmail.com. Decisions regarding the acceptance of proposals will be communicated by July 31, 2026.
